U.S. Senate Youth Program
Sponsored by the Hearst Foundation, and is held each year in Washington, D.C. during March. Two high school juniors and/or seniors from DoDDS are selected to represent the school system in a series of seminar sessions on government. The two DoDDS delegates selected each receive a $5,000 college scholarship. Information concerning this program and the application packet is sent to each high school in late August with an October deadline.
National Geography Bee
Sponsored by the National Geographic Society and held during late spring in Washington, D.C. A DoDEA students will represent our school system in a contest of geographic knowledge as the compete for a $25,000 college scholarship. Schools with students in grades 4-8 must register with the national Geographic Society by early October in order to participate in the contest.
Model United States Senate
DoDDS high school students from across Europe role play U.S. Senators as they prepare, debate, and enact legislation. This spring time event is held annually in Bad Kissingen, Germany.
Junior Leadership Seminar
Held in Oberwesel, Germany and is designed to give students in grades seven and eight a week of concentrated instruction and practice in leadership skills.
Model United Nations
Held in Den Haag, Netherlands; high school students delegations represent nations in a practical application of social studies skills. Information concerning this program is sent to all schools in early September.
National History Day
A yearlong education program that engages students in grades 6 - 12 in the process of discovery and interpretation of historical topics. Students produce dramatic performances, imaginative exhibits, multimedia documentaries and research papers based on research related to an annual theme. These projects are then evaluated at local, district, area and national competitions.
