Mr. Carl Albrecht
Assistant Superintendent

Welcome to the Mediterranean District. We proudly serve approximately 6500 students in American military communities with command structures from the Army, Navy, Air Force and NATO. Our district extends from southern Spain to northern Italy to eastern Turkey and to the tiny island of Terceira, Azores, Portugal. Our students enjoy unique opportunities to experience modern and ancient cultures. These include colorful Spanish festivals, Carnivale in Venice, Greek-Roman ruins in Sicily, picturesque villages in Tuscany and historical religious sites in Turkey. Students take advantage of the rich cultural and educational experiences that are offered in the Mediterranean District.

The North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA-CASI) accredits all schools in our district. Schools feature a rigorous U.S. curriculum with offerings which include JROTC, AVID, advanced placement, honors, gifted education, foreign languages (Spanish, French, Turkish, and Italian), CISCO Academy, professional-technical studies, as well as academic support classes Our schools offer an array of extra-curricular academic and athletic opportunities. Students can participate in extracurricular activities such as: science fairs, speech and drama Fests, foreign language clubs, music festivals, geography bees, Math Counts, Odyssey of the Mind, and Knowledge Bowl. They can also compete in a variety of sports with many regional championships.

To support the DoDEA goal of Highest Student Achievement for ALL Students, our district educational focus is on standards-based instruction and best instructional practices with a special emphasis on early childhood literacy and problem-solving skills. Other district initiatives include increasing professional-technical studies and career planning in high schools, implementing the middle school philosophy through partnering with the University of Southern Florida, and enhancing instruction in elementary, middle, and high schools with additional staffing for gifted education. Our educational leaders will continue to use data-based decision-making to promote student success. Elementary schools enjoy full-day kindergarten programs and reduced class sizes in first through third grade.

The contributions of parents, military commanders, and community members enhance many programs. These individuals assist our schools by mentoring students and volunteering in classrooms. We invite parents to become active members of our school community. Please volunteer to be a member of a decision-making school body, a mentor, or classroom assistant. Our military partnerships are strong due to supportive commanders. We are committed to serving our military communities and the needs of their children.

If you have questions, please contact your local principal or the district office in Vicenza, Italy. Our office number is DSN 634-8460 or from a commercial line +39 0444 71 8460. We look forward to meeting and working with you throughout the year.
