| The Mediterranean District supports the vision that students with disabilities will be educated in their least restrictive environment and receive the same quality of instruction as their non-disabled peers. | ![]() |
DoDEA's vision for special education is based on the principles of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and are in-line with the Community Strategic Plan which reflects the DoDEA vision of "communities investing in success for ALL students" through promoting highest student achievement, and a network of partnerships. The Special Education Initiative will, over the next six fiscal year, provide staffing, curriculum materials, and staff development for educators. It will also provide furniture and equipment, especially to enhance the programming for students with moderate to severe disabilities.
Beginning school year 2003 - 2004, the Special Education Initiative has supported additional staffing in the way of assessment teams and additional educational paraprofessionals. This year we will initiate the purchase of curriculum materials and technology to support children with disabilities. Staff development for special educators, support staff and parents will begin and will continue throughout the next six years.
